- Companies usually earn more from their business than they pay in interest. In January, Whirlpool expected about $875 million of adjusted operating profit this year, more than twice its interest bill.
- Its new forecast is about $293 million, below about $350 million of interest. A company that earns less than its interest loses money before taxes, so even its adjusted forecast is now a loss.
- Along the way, Whirlpool suspended its $0.90 quarterly dividend and replaced debt due in 2026 and 2027 with $2 billion of higher-rate notes, second in line on its receivables, inventory and other assets.
- In February it sold new shares at $69.00. Its stock closed at $26.45 on Oct. 26, before the forecast came out: 61.7% below that price, and its lowest close since March 2009.
- Next: a 7% price increase in North America takes effect in the fourth quarter, Whirlpool says.
The forecast: Whirlpool, the appliance maker, now expects to lose about $1.30 a share in 2026 on its adjusted measure, which leaves out restructuring costs and other items, it said after the market closed on Oct. 26.8-KEDGAR In January it had expected a profit of about $7.00 a share.8-K On the usual accounting basis, it now expects a loss of about $4.95.8-K
The math: Its outlook tables explain the loss. Whirlpool expects about $293 million of adjusted operating profit this year, before interest and taxes, and about $350 million of interest.8-K Its January outlook showed about $875 million of operating profit. A March 2 filing put the interest assumed in that outlook at about $330 million.8-K8-K
Why it matters: Its release called the February stock sale a "Strategic Recapitalization to Accelerate Deleveraging and Strategic Growth." Its board called suspending the dividend "prudent to strengthen our balance sheet in light of current macroeconomic uncertainties."8-K10-Q The share sale lowered its interest forecast to about $293 million, from $330 million. After Whirlpool replaced debt due in 2026 and 2027 with higher-rate secured notes in June, the interest forecast rose to about $350 million. In August it trimmed its profit forecast for one stated reason, a new interest outlook. Its sales and margin outlook did not change.8-K8-K

How the forecast came down
The first change came from the share sale itself. On Feb. 27, Whirlpool sold about 7.9 million new shares at $69.00 each, including shares its underwriters bought under their option, plus a new 8.50% preferred stock that turns into common stock in 2029.8-K10-Q It took in about $1.08 billion after fees and used about $900 million to pay down its credit line.10-Q With 13.9 million more shares in the count, it recalculated its forecast on March 2 to about $6.00 a share. The same filing lowered its interest assumption to about $293 million, from about $330 million.8-K
On May 6 it cut the forecast to $3.00 to $3.50 a share. Its release said: "War in Iran resulted in recession-level industry decline in the U.S. as consumer confidence collapsed in late February and March."8-K Its board also suspended the quarterly dividend of $0.90 a share, calling that "prudent to strengthen our balance sheet in light of current macroeconomic uncertainties."10-Q

How we got these numbers
- Prices are end-of-day closes as traded, not adjusted for dividends. Daily moves are close to close. Every Whirlpool close in the chart's Story range is in its data table. "Lowest close since March 2009" checks every as-traded close KeyVex holds back to 1990: the last one below $26.45 was $25.72, on March 20, 2009. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 lines follow SPY and QQQ, also as traded, rebased to Whirlpool's close at the start of the range shown. The Filings switch shows the filing markers from KeyVex's Whirlpool stock page, a selection of congressional trades, insider trades, 8-Ks and lobbying filings: not every filing, and not only those tied to this story.
- "Adjusted" means Whirlpool's own "ongoing" measures, which leave out restructuring costs, impairments, gains and losses on deals and some other items. Adjusted operating profit is its "ongoing EBIT." The forecast figures for operating profit and interest expense come from the full-year outlook reconciliations in each results release; the January interest figure comes from the March 2 8-K, which restated the January guidance. Whirlpool gives these figures with "approximately" or "~", as the story does.
- "About $1.08 billion" adds the net proceeds Whirlpool reported for the common stock (about $524 million) and the preferred (about $557 million). In the forecast chart, the May 6 and Aug. 3 columns are the midpoints of Whirlpool's ranges, KeyVex's math.
- The call remarks are from a transcript published by Investing.com, not by Whirlpool.
