- Accenture had planned to spend $300 million buying back its own shares this summer. After its stock's worst day since its 2001 listing, it added $2 billion, saying the price did not reflect its strength.
- A lower price means each dollar buys more shares. From June to August, $2.3 billion bought 17.6 million of them, nearly twice the 9.5 million the same sum bought last fall.
- Buybacks shrink the share count, so each share left holds a bigger slice of profit. Net of new shares issued, Accenture had about 596 million at Aug. 31, versus 622 million a year earlier.
- For the year to August 2027, Accenture plans $5.5 billion of buybacks, $2 billion less than this year, its finance chief said on Oct. 1.
- Accenture holds an Investor Day in New York on Oct. 14.

How we got these numbers
- Prices are end-of-day closes as traded, not adjusted for dividends. Daily moves are close to close. "Biggest one-day gain since October 2008" and "worst day since its 2001 listing" compare closes over every trading day since Accenture's first close, July 19, 2001. Every Accenture close in the chart's Story range is in its data table. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 lines follow SPY and QQQ, also as traded, rebased to Accenture's close at the start of the range shown. The Filings switch shows the filing markers from KeyVex's Accenture stock page, a selection of congressional trades, insider sales, Form 144 notices, 8-Ks and lobbying filings: not every filing, and not only those tied to this story.
- Buyback figures are Accenture's own: shares "repurchased or redeemed" and dollars spent, as given in each quarter's results release, rounded there to a tenth of a million shares and a tenth of a billion dollars. Average prices are the ones its chief financial officer gave on each quarter's earnings call.
- "Nearly twice as many" is 17.6 million shares against 9.5 million, 1.85 times. The quarter's shares of the year (44% of shares, 31% of dollars) are 17.6 of 39.9 million and $2.3 billion of $7.5 billion.
- Accenture's fiscal year ends Aug. 31, so fiscal 2026 ran from Sept. 1, 2025 to Aug. 31, 2026.
