Netflix cut its ad forecast by about $300 million. Its 2026 revenue forecast moved 0.2%.

Netflix's Oct. 20 shareholder letter puts 2026 ad revenue at about $2.7 billion, a goal it had put at $3 billion since April. Its co-chief executive says growth in mature markets will lean on ads and revenue per member.

  1. Since April, Netflix had said it expected about $3 billion from ads in 2026, double 2025. On Oct. 20 it cut that to about $2.7 billion, citing a slower rollout of some ad products.
  2. Its 2026 revenue forecast is now $51.1 billion, 0.2% below the middle of its July range. Ads are about 5% of that, and the letter says subscription revenue growth beat Netflix's expectations.
  3. The cut is small in dollars. Asked in Netflix's earnings interview where growth comes from in mature markets like the U.S., co-chief executive Greg Peters named ads and revenue per member.
  4. Netflix plans to bring its ad-supported plan to 12 more countries in March 2027, the first of 15 new ad markets that year.

The cut: Netflix put its 2026 ad revenue at about $2.7 billion, down from about $3 billion, in its quarterly letter to shareholders, filed with the SEC after the market closed on Oct. 20.8-K That is a cut of about 10%. It cited a "slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities."8-K Netflix had closed at $68.69 that day. In after-hours trading, its shares fell 5.93% to $64.62, Investing.com reported.Investing.com

The year: The same letter put 2026 revenue at $51.1 billion, 0.2% below the midpoint of the range it gave in July.8-K8-K By KeyVex's math from the letter's own quarterly figures, that is less than $100 million, against about $300 million off the ad forecast. Subscription revenue growth, the letter says, outperformed Netflix's expectations.8-K

Why it matters: Ads are about 5% of the revenue Netflix expects this year, by KeyVex's math, so the dollars are small.8-K In Netflix's Oct. 20 earnings interview, a Morgan Stanley analyst asked where growth would come from in mature markets. Co-chief executive Greg Peters named the U.S., the U.K. and Australia: "our revenue growth drivers in those markets are going to skew towards ARM and advertising growth." ARM is average revenue per membership.Transcript

The goal, letter by letter

Netflix reports each quarter in a letter to shareholders, filed with the SEC. In January, it said its 2025 ad revenue had risen more than 2.5 times, to over $1.5 billion. For 2026 it forecast ad revenue would "roughly double."8-K

In April it put a number on it. Ad revenue, the letter said, "remains on track to reach $3B in 2026, up 2x year-over-year."8-K In July it said again it was on track for "approximately $3 billion," while narrowing its revenue range to $51.0 billion to $51.4 billion.8-K

What Netflix says went wrong

In the interview, Peters said Netflix set "big growth targets for our ads business this year," with an "aggressive product roadmap" to match, according to a transcript published by Investing.com. "We are currently a bit behind our aggressive target for the year," he said.Transcript

"We have seen some delays in the rollout and partner integrations for some of those new ads products," Peters said. Taking "a modest short-term hit for a better long-term strategic position is a good ultimate trade-off," he said.Transcript The ad business is still growing "over 80% this year," he added.Transcript

The rest of the year, and the doubts

Netflix still forecasts a 31.5% operating margin for 2026, the share of revenue left after operating costs, as it did in July. That includes about 0.3 percentage point of drag from fourth-quarter headcount reductions.8-K8-K Third-quarter revenue rose 12% to $12.9 billion, in line with its forecast.8-K

Mike Proulx, a vice president and research director at Forrester, called Netflix's slowing growth "a wake-up call," MediaPost reported. The ad cut, he said, gives "even more reason to question just how much of that growth can come from advertising."MediaPost

In March 2027, Netflix plans to launch its ad plan in 12 countries: nine in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, plus Colombia, Peru and New Zealand. They are the first of 15 new ad markets for 2027.8-K

What to watch

  1. Netflix's fourth quarter, which it forecasts at $13.4 billion of revenue and a 26.0% operating margin.

  2. Netflix's ad plan launches in its first 12 new countries.

  3. Three more new ad markets, for 15 in all.

How we got these numbers

  • Prices are end-of-day closes as traded, not adjusted for dividends. Netflix split its stock 10 for 1 in November 2025; earlier closes are divided by 10 so the line is continuous. The chart's data runs through the Oct. 20, 2026 close, the last in KeyVex when this story was written. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 lines follow SPY and QQQ, rebased to Netflix's close at the start of the range shown. The Filings switch shows a selection of filing markers from KeyVex's Netflix page, not every filing, and not only those tied to this story.
  • The forecast changes are KeyVex's math from figures Netflix's letters round: about $3 billion less about $2.7 billion for ads, and the $51.2 billion midpoint of the July range ($51.0 billion to $51.4 billion) less $51.126 billion, the sum of the four 2026 quarters in the Oct. 20 letter's table ($12,250 million, $12,560 million and $12,874 million reported, $13,442 million forecast). That is about $74 million. The letter itself puts the total at $51.1 billion, 0.2% below that midpoint.
  • Ads as a share of revenue is about $2.7 billion divided by $51.1 billion, about 5.3%.
