- A buyback works like this: a company buys its own shares and retires them. Each remaining share owns a bigger slice of the profit, so profit per share can grow faster than profit.
- That shows in GM's results. Through September, its adjusted operating profit rose 24% from a year earlier, while its adjusted earnings per share rose 36%.
- The new $20 billion is a ceiling on future buying, not money spent. It tops what GM paid for its stock in any year since 2023, and the free cash flow it forecasts for 2026.
- GM's stock closed Oct. 19 at about 2.4 times its January 2023 price, so each dollar retires fewer. GM expects the buying to continue "as long as the valuation remains depressed," its finance chief said.
- Next on the record: GM sets its 2027 budget in December and gives guidance in January, he said. He gave no pace for the new buyback.

How far the share count has already fallen
The count fell every year on those covers: 1.15 billion in January 2024, 995 million in January 2025 and 904 million in January 2026.10-K10-K10-K
On Nov. 29, 2023, GM announced a $10 billion accelerated share repurchase. In that kind of deal, GM pays the banks first and receives most of the shares at once; the final count is set later.8-K Later authorizations included a $6 billion program in February 2025 and another $6.0 billion in January 2026.8-K8-K The last of those was used up in October, the 10-Q says.10-Q

What fewer shares do to the numbers
In the first nine months of 2026, GM's adjusted operating profit, which it calls EBIT-adjusted, rose 24% to $12.3 billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose 36%, to $10.97.8-K Most of the gap is the share count: GM's average diluted share count, which includes shares that could be issued from stock awards, fell about 7% over the same stretch.8-K

Where the money comes from
GM's automotive business brought in $13.7 billion of operating cash in the first nine months.10-Q It spent $5.8 billion on capital projects and $6.2 billion on buybacks and dividends.10-Q Its automotive liquidity, the cash, securities and credit lines it can draw on, still rose $1.5 billion.10-Q
GM is still paying for its pullback from electric vehicles. It recorded $3.6 billion of charges for it in the first nine months.8-K Jacobson said GM has paid $4.6 billion of $7.4 billion in cash charges since mid-2025. He expects to pay about $1 billion more in the fourth quarter and the rest in 2027.Call

What GM said about the year ahead
GM narrowed its 2026 range for adjusted operating profit to $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion, from $14 billion to $16 billion.8-K Barra said GM's business is performing well. She also said "there are clear external headwinds, and in some cases, they are intensifying." GM still believes 2027 will be "another strong year and better than 2026," she said, if demand holds and cost pressures ease.Call
Jacobson put this year's hit from commodities, logistics and memory chips at about $2 billion. Annualizing the inflation since July would add $1 billion to $1.5 billion of headwind in 2027, he said, for a total 2027 headwind of roughly $2 billion.Call Emmanuel Rosner of Wolfe Research asked whether GM's goal to grow 2027 earnings assumed that $2 billion. How we got these numbers
- Prices are end-of-day closes as traded, not adjusted for dividends. GM's official Oct. 20 close was not yet in KeyVex's data when this story was written, so the chart runs through the Oct. 19 close. The Oct. 20 price, $77.09, is the last regular-hours trade on IEX at 4 p.m. Eastern, via Tiingo, against the $82.75 Oct. 19 close: a 6.8% drop.
